JOINABILITY
In conjunction with the material supplier and Product DevelopmentMaterials Engineering, the affected local manufacturing activityshall, as part of the initial material source approval process, approve the joinability (e.g., resistance spot welding, riveting, adhesive bonding) of this material by means of laboratory test(s),manufacturing trial(s), and/or another mutually acceptablealternative, using the e and methods that are proposed forproduction.
If needed to enable the fabrication of a specific component, restricted tolerances and/or additional material propertyre (i.e., the " level" of the steel) shall bedeveloped by the affected manufacturing activity and the steelsupplier. Examples include, but are not limited to:restricted chemical composition, restricted gauge tolerance, specified minimum n-value, and specified surface condition.
The " level" of the steel for a specific component:
· shall not conflict with specified re in paragraph 3 ofthis Engineering Material Specification
· shall be described in detail by the local manufacturingactivity
· shall be a mandatory extension of these Engineering MaterialSpecifications
Acceptance of subsequent orders by the steel supplier for a givencomponent at the agreed upon level implies that all steelsupplied will be of a comparable level and can be joinedsatisfactorily as defined and recorded by the manufacturingactivity.
3.7 SURFACE APPEARANCE,CONDITION, AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS(Ra)
3.7.1 Surface Classification
Surface appearance shall be defined as Class 1 or Class 3:
· A Class 1 surface shall be specified for parts of the vehicle thatare exposed to view after paint or trim.
